This sweet bread ring filled with cinnamon and walnuts will become a new favorite holday tradition.

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg quick yeast
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 cup milk, scalded
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 eggs
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 Tbsp cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 cup melted butter
  • Powderd sugar icing

Method

Soak yeast with 1 tbsp sugar in 1/4 cup warm water (not hot). Scald milk & add shortening, sugar, & salt. Cool milk. Then add yeast, beaten eggs, & flour and mix well. Let dough stand, covered, in a warm place until doubled in bulk. Punch dough down & let dough rest for 10-15 minutes. Divide dough into 3 balls. Pat or roll each ball into a rectangle about 1/2" thick. Spread with melted butter. Combine chopped walnuts, cinnamon, & 1/2 cup sugar. Sprinkle 1/3 of this mixture on top of melted butter. Roll up as for a jelly roll. Form dough into a circle and blend ends together. With a kitchen shears slice roll into 3/4" sections (cut nearly to the center). Let rise until doubled in size. Bake at 350 degrees about 15 minutes(or until done). Frost ring with powdered sugar icing. Sprinkle with additional chopped walnuts. Serve with butter.

Notes: For Christmas holiday place 3-4 live holly leaves in center for garnish. Icing: 2 cups powdered sugar with 1 tsp vanilla and 1/4 cup milk or water. Mix well, adding more milk or water until icing reaches desired consistency for drizzling on ring.

Number of Servings: 3 rings, each serve 6
