This starter mixture is used in sourdough breads, biscuits, pancakes, waffles, etc. It's made with flour, water, plain yogurt and a little sugar. The friendly microorganisms in the yogurt give the mixture a "start."

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups cold water
  • 2 tbsp. plain yogurt
  • 1/2 tsp. sugar

Method

Place all 4 of the ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Combine, using a mixer fitted with a paddle attachment; beat on low speed for 3 minutes. (Or beat smooth by hand, with a rotary beater or a wire whisk.) Pour the mixture into a container and cover it loosely with plastic wrap. Let the starter stand at room temperature for 2 days (48 hours), stirring occasionally, before using. Refrigerate to store.
